Collegiate had to win over Invercargill at Tweed Street, to keep its second placing in the senior rugby championship in 1956. After being tied up at 3-3, Collegiate came out firing in the second half to end up winning 27-3.
Collegiate looked the better combination with I. Nuttal and Len Wilson back together in the five-eights with them dotting down 5 tries in the second half and 3 of them by the wingers.
Wilson paved the way for Collegiate's victory, getting a fair service behind a stronger pack he made several beautiful midlfield breaks to give those out side him many scoring opportunities.
No sooner had winger W. Smith scored for Invercargill after a flind-side move by Les Crosswell then Wilson, receiving from a set scrum about the halfway broke past his opposite, B. Barton, with apparent ease and ran to the full-back. He handed on to the strong-running centre A. Dalzell, who scored with a man outside him.
All the Collegiate backs gave a sound display although R. McPhedran had an off-day with his boot.
He missed three attempts to kick penalty goals early in the game and Nuttal did most of the kicking after that.
The penalties were three of many awarded against Invercargill's front row int he final half. The Blue forwards were hooking the ball regularly, but the backs could do little with it.
Invercargill, halfback, r. Malcolm, getting a torrid time from fast-breaking Collegiate forwards, missed out some nice passes and gave a sound display.
Outstanding loose play by Ian Todd and R. Todd for Collegiate was a feature of the game.
