Invercargill cricket competition got to an interesting stage in December 1972 when most teams were all playing good cricket to make it one of the closest finishes in years.
Georgetown's batting was tested the previous week against Old Boys, with Brent Crawford giving a find display of batting when he got his century.
Appleby had no real batting stars, but has a consistent lineup of average batters which consistently gave their team runs in the 20-40's. They do have the tight medium bowling though of Peter Dick and Lindsay Barnett.
Invercargill would have been confident when they met Union at Queens Park,.
Marist had players such as Kevin O'Connor, Leo Ward, Trevor Thornton, Bill Scully and John Mahoney, Max Forde, Jack Alabaster.
Old Boys players were: Graham Noble (captain), Dennis Cocks, Graham Buist, Des Barnett and Neil Adam.
