Giles, Sycamore, Alcock all locals who had a successful 1960-61 season in cycling - Invercargill Southland.....
It was the end of the 1960-61 cycling season in Invercargill, Southland and was one of the best seasons to date. Interprovincial competition between Otago and Southland were successful and seven medals came south from the New Zealand grass and hard track championships.
The spectators were privy to some great riders like; Ron Bonesch, the Australian Olympic at the Rome Games, Peter Bartels, holder of the New Zealand 200 metres record at 11.5 sec, B. Goldsworthy, B. Bowden, G. Wright, G. Ulmer, B. Kitchen and I. Crystall, Warren Johnson and A. Walsh.
Local rider, Graham Sycamore went on to win the New Zealand junior half mile grass track title and a two mile third placing. He then went on to win both the Otago-Southland 10 miles and 1000 metre time trial championships.
Two Australians, Cliff Burrvil and Max Langshaw, who rode for the club, provided first class action which saw the local riders step up to their mark.
Other national placegetters were: Ray Alcock won third place in the New Zealand senior three miles grass track event and Ron Giles finished a close third in the New Zealand junior five mile .
