Welcome to Yacck - we hope you have great pleasure in reading the stories from the past and would love you to make positive comments for everyone to enjoy. The Yacck Team.
The first round of the 1983 senior Northern rugby competition was completed with Waikaia and Lumsden sharing the lead.
Mossburn beat Riversdale on their home turf by being dominant in the rucks, mauls and line-outs. Bruce Taylor for Mossburn scored a great try and then a successful penalty goal by Geoff Stevens put the visiting team on the board first.
Riversdale's Lindsay Tayles and Don McKay each scored two quick tries which made the score 8-7 at half time.
Mossburn came back from half time with a new game plan, to force play into Riversdale's territory and to entice mistakes, which they did and with Stevens being an accurate goal kicker it was not long before he was successful to put his team in front.
He also added two more before full time.
Mossburn No 8, Ken Patterson led his forwards well and was supported by Alan Stalker.
In the tight Steven Webster at prop got through a mountain of work and locks John Cournane and Ross McLean never let up the pressure.
Alec Kirk at half back was a great link between the forwards and backs, and when Barry Taylor got the ball on the wing he showed his pace.
Riversdale's flanker, Kevin O'Connor worked untiringly all day and was well supported by Jack Elder.
Bob Collins at half back withstood a lot of pressure and his partner at first five eight, Struan McCrostie ensured the score was not greater by kicking well to keep his team from more suffering.
The final score was 16-8. The referee was Hamish Mavor.
