The killing season at the Soutland Frozen Meat in 1933 saw the pouring in of lambs to be killed. All three works are at capacity and it has not taken long at all for this to happen.  The demands of the farmers for their lambs to be processed is causing a headache as these works barely have the staff to be able to cope.
There was a large entry of fat lambs at the Lorneville stock yards but on account of congestion at the works buyers were unable to operate and the offering was neglected.
Approx 10,000 lambs are being transported to the works daily and the Railways is being kept very busy handling this large volume of stock., which means there has been a larger demand for trucks.  The figures of the lambs being sent to the works daily is Ocean Beach 4000, Makarewa 3000 and Mataura 2000.   As the works have been operating for barely a week they have not been able to reach the large tallies likely to be recorded which is mainly due to the staff not being up to speed.
No difficulties have resulted in finding necessary staff to man the works despite the union desputes in the North and the regular slaughterman and other workers are to found at their usual posts.
A few however, have elected not to accept the reduced wages offerings and their places have been taken from other workers from the ranks of the large number of appliants.
The result has been that several learners have been engaged at the slaughterboards and cannot be expected to reach tally until they have had wider experience. In respect of this operations are not up to the usual standard.
So far as the lambs themselves are concerned they have been of the highest quality on record.  A reporter who visited the Makarewa works yesterday saw a very large draught of lambs of very good quality entering the cooling room.
