Bluff was holding their seventh Sportsmen of the Year award in 1986 with seven sports people nominated for the award.
The Eddie Robinson memorial trophy had been won by the previous winners:
1979 - Mrs Judy Westbury (hockey) - a member of the successful Bluff hockey team and a prominent golf player.
1980 - Chris Hini (Rugby) - a prominent member of the Bluff Rugby Club and had
1981 - Tony Richards (Golf) -
1982 - Paul Heads and Wayne Shaw (Yachting)
1983- Betty Henry (Hockey) Prominent member of Bluff Hockey Club that won many titles.
1984- Kevin Flutey and Rex Ryan (Rowing) Second in the national lightweight double sculls.
The eight nominated for the Eddie Robinson award are:
Moana Blair - (Hockey) A member of the Bluff Club for several years, and won the senior competition. Moana had won selection in the Southland Senior squad. Was selected in the 1985 New Zealand Indoor Hockey team.
Jeff Mead - (Rugby) The captain of the Bluff senior rugby team. Selected for Southland in 1985.
Been involved at all levels in the Bluff Rugby Club.
Glen Deans - (Arawua Boating Club) Unbeaten in junior sculling in Southland. Named in New Zealand junior trials.
Jason Eade - (Bluff Lions Boxing) National junior title holder. Won South Island Golden Gloves and Southland titles. Since then had won four New Zealand boxing championships including the Jamieson Belt in 1988.
Kali Low - (Softball) A member of the Port Softball Club and six years in the Southland Softball team, she was also involved in coaching.
Joyce Gilson (Bowling) A member of the Bluff bowling club, a Southland bowls representative, has won many bluff club titles, including the club's Fletcher trophy, eight times club singles winner and the pairs seven times. Currently President of the club.
Waka Moses (Darts) Current member of the Golden Age Darts Club, runner up in singles at national tournament, winner of South Island tournament. Selected in four man New Zealand team for world cup where they finished fourth.
Hannah Smith (Golf) A member of the Bluff Golf Club, selected in the Southland Country Golf team, and for Southland in the Salisbury Cup match against Otago. Was winner of the Green Acres and Bluff tournaments and runner up in the Southland Championships. Involved in club administration.
Nominations for Administrator of year were:
Sandra Kapo (Softball) A past player and currently coaches three Port teams, Southland Junior Advisory Board, Manager SBHS U 14 team, South Island Manager.
Terry Osbourne (Rugby) Controls Bluff Schoolboys rugby, fundraised, Club Captain of squash club, member of the Bluff Fire Brigade.
Christine Ryan (Swimming) Two years as Bluff Swimming Club secretary, six years as swimming carnival secretary,.
Frank Silvester (Golf) 35 years in administration of Bluff Golf Club. Convener of greens committee.
Anthony Vella (Boating) Involved for over thirty years in Awarua Boating Club and made a life member of club in 1984. Coached Kevin Flutey and Rex Ryan to their second place in national lightweight double sculls.
