Eastern V Central in 1959 Country Day...

Here are other games played that weekend - Eastern was too strong for Central winning 24-9
With Eastern, speeding the ball up and their backing up made it that they were all over Central and Eastern used their heads as well as great ball skills, which ensured with this cleverness and agility they left Central in their wake.
Four players in the Central pack tipped the scales at over 15 stone, and two over 14 stone.  With this heavy pack Central dominated in the scrums rucks and lineouts, where they won a feast of ball.  But when the pace went on they were found wanting.  The Central backs did not make the most of the huge amount of ball they received from their hard working forwards.
Eastern and Southland Wing-threequarter, R. Todd, was the outstanding back on the field, and showed elusiveness and speed to outplay his team mate, Southland and Eastern winger, J. Allison.
Southland captain, Robin Archer,  was in fine spirit at first five eight for Eastern, and D.L. Ashby, and Robin Welsh, contributed to Eastern's backline superiority.  Welsh a pacy centre twice ran past Hutchinson.
Eastern's best try was when Welsh picked the ball up from his bootlaces after Archer had dropped out from the 25 and passed to Todd, who beat two men in a sideline dash, then whipped an in-pass to Welsh, who cleared away from grabbing hands to score.
Livewire, Arthur McMeeken figured prominently in the loose, and T. Ryan (Eastern) and E. Condon ( Central) were two able breakaways.  In the tight I.M. Miller and company used their weight effectively but the more mobile Eastern forwards had the last words.
Notable in the game was that Central was awarded 25 penalties but could only turn 10 penalty goals into 3 successes.
EASTERN: D.L. Ashby,(3 con, 1 Pen) R. Todd.(1), R. Welsh  (1), J.G. Allison.(2), R. Cooney., W. R Archer., R. McDonald., A. McMeeken., D. O'Shea., C. O'Brien., B. Borland., T. Ryan.(1), R., Ramage., M. Forde., T. Potae., I. Rance (replaced T. Potae).
