Dougal Downie key in Soccer win over Invercargill in 1973...

Invercargill City soccer side lost to Dunedin North End giving the latter an opportunity to receive the honours for first division. A great game was seen with the home team, Invercargill not taking opportunities given to them, with their shortcomings being in front of their goal.
Although going down 1-0, Invercargill took merit from the game and looked like they had reached their form of early season.
Bob Kemp, North End keeper, was never tried and he was well supported by Dougal Downie, who was one of the most intelligent player in the league.
Downie found gaps easily, and was in the right place to net the only goal of the game.  At one stage he was tackled strongly by Invercargill's captain, Peter Dick, but it was astounding that he managed to be on his feet and at the other end of the pitch to clear a loose ball from an Invercargill mis-kick.
Other players to shine for North End were; Neville Markham, Stuart Anderson, Keith Hindle, Mitch Goodall, Neil Henderson and Sonny Wong.
City would have felt happy enough, despite the loss, with one defensive lapse proving fatal.
Chris Mathieson, Lance Howley, Noel Bennett, Robbie Dick, Ross Malcolm, Peter Malcolm, Reid Beaumont, Bob Mexted, Colin Anderson, Wayne Andersen and Stew Grant all contributed to the game.
The curtain raiser to the above game between Invercargill City. second grade and Roslyn Waikari saw the former go down 1-0.
Neither side really took control of the game until Ronnie Woods was in the right place to head a ball into Invercargill's net.
