Invercargill held the National Women's Soccer Tournament in 1978 and because Southland won the minor division last year in 1977 they are now in the major division.  They will face Auckland, Canterbury, Wellington.  Southland won the South Island championship in Blenheim earlier on.
Debbie Ottley, daughter of Southland coach Doug Ottley will be playing for South Canterbury this year and her professionalism and skills that she has bought to the team have paid off as they were impressive in the South Island tournament.
Debbie's sisters Barbara Cundall and Denise Stevens are both named in the Southland team
along with Sandra Mitchell who has been the South Island goal keeper as well.
Sue Hammond, Jenny Lee and Katherine Panagiotidis will join Stevens in the backs.  The mid field will have a hard working trio of Cundall, Agnes O'Donnell and June Horsman, who all have the ability to go further.
The forwards have pace and strength with Angela McAskill who has the power and accuracy to put the  ball away.  Wendy Munro is an option for the centre forward position and she can use both feet to trick the opponents.
Eva Rudolph could be the right wing, and this player has come a long way in a short time and with the experience of other players around her she will learn to hunt the ball more.  Ann Carmichael is another new player with heaps of potential.
Pam Craig and Lorraine Kelman and Craig played well last season and hopefully she can continue on the same path.  Kelman is another newcomer and is versatile as she can either play forward or back.
Josie Rudolph is the second goal keeper and has a strong clearing kick.  She is improving all the time and is a great back up to Sandra Mitchell.
