Doug Dixey breaks Southland mile record at Winton 1959...

Two Southland records fell in athletics and bushcraft at the Winton Caledonian annual sports day in 1959.  Doug Dixey running from the back mark, won the mile on a track that was hard and bumpy.  D. Herbertson won the 12 inch chop in 39 seconds.
The dummies that hold the logs for the bush men were redesigned so the log could not work loose, and Mick Carran was full of praise for it.
This was not the first time that Dixey had broken a Southland record and had recorded 4.14 sec at the same meet the previous year, but because he had not resided in Southland for the correct time it could not be recognised.
Also outstanding in the athletics were two fijians - Billy Rounds and Danny Johns.
