I have been reading your great articles on rugby which reminded me that I had a couple of photos I would love to share with you.  It was not only the men that played but the women were the stars with more spectators watching them than the Southland v South Canterbury colts in  1964.....
The article below featured Joan Milne for Pirates.  They played against the Invercargill side.
In the second photo Invercargill's Lavina Gray spins the ball just as she is about to be tackled by a Pirates player.

This photo is in the same game and Invercargill won the game 12-3.
Diane Purdue was outstanding for Invercargill in the front row.
I can see Doreen Jack on the left sitting.

On the back it says Helen, Doreen and Joy. I know Doreen Jack is the one with the blond curly hair!

My Mum is Doreen Jack (nee Hope )and this game has been talked about over the years within our family. I think the Ladies team played at 2 different times. Mums sister Ann Shaw (nee Hope) also played in one of the games for the Pirates Team.
Thanks for sharing the newspaper cuttings.
