David Beale one of Southland's sports junior people who are doing well in their chosen sport in 1954.
Joy Porter, a Winton girl who worked on the family farm in 1955 went to town in the weekends to play tennis. She played in the women's A grade and beat Mrs K. Sutherland, nee Cutt, who was a Southland representative. Her ground strokes were hit hard and precise, in particular her backhand. She would be a player for the future.
Other Southland sports people to impress were:
Denis Beale, who is only 16, who plays football in winter and cricket in the summer, but it was golf that he showed the most promise. He won the junior Southland boys' golf tournament. His handicap was 9, and had a round of 74 on Queens Park.
Beverley Davenport, has represented Southland at basketball and is very passionate about life saving and swimming.
Ted Mortimer, is a tall lad who plays tennis for Invercargill club. With a good ground stroke and a sound service he holds a high place on the junior provincial ladder.
Pamela Butchers, is head prefect at Southland Girls' High School and is very gifted at athletics.
Lindo Francis, is found on the golf course and like Beale has a handicap of 9 and was runner up in the Southland senior boys' golf tournament that year.
