Dallas and Fairweather score a stunning try for Collegiate against Invercargill in 1966......4/14/2016 The Collegiate/Invercargill was definitely the match of the day on 2nd July 1966 with the crowd being entertained by both sides playing good open rugby. Collegiate won 14-9. Collegiate's forwards were not afraid to be facing the best pack in the competition in Invercargill and with strong rucking and powerful forward drives and being able to walk the Invercargill back metres they wore the opposition down.
Once in the second half Collegiate gained 25 yards in one manoeuvre with the ball buried in the middle of the ruck. This looked like the old pack of 1965 when it won the Galbraith Shield. The backs also supported their forwards with great off loads and pace. Both of Collegiates tries came from passing movements The first came after 30 minutes of hard slog up front. R. Dallas, the lightweight, winger made a break on the right flank and got away an inpass to P. Fairweather, who topped off a sparkling movement with a try. The second came early in the second half, which was the result of a short side break with K. Edwards on the wing dashing for the corner and getting away a pass to C. McIntosh (flanker) who scored. This was fitting for McIntosh who had an outstanding game. Collegiate were ahead 8-0 at halftime, but would have been wondering if it would be enough as when they returned, Invercargill would have the wind at their backs. But it was not to be and Collegiate improved on their first half performance, and knew that even though the type of game they had to play would concede penalties, but it was the better option. Half-back for Collegiate M. Lane linked well with his backs and McIntosh, C. McColl, S. Eade and M. Martin contributed to the solid pack. Invercargill played an individualist game with Trevor Keely being the most guilty. H. Townsend and G. Jacobsen managed to break the Marist line but did not have the pace to continue on. Ken Dixon at half-back for Invercargill was playing on the wing and managed to score their only try. Collegiate: Fairweather (1) McIntosh (1) G. Murphy (2PG) (1Con) Invercargill: Kenny Dixon (1)Townsend (1PG) Jacobsen (1PG) Reference: Collegiate's Pack In Rare Form. The Star Times. July 1966.
