Chris Carlaw won the 1983 Southland Table Tennis A grade  beating Kevin Tapper in the final.  Carlaw went through the tournament without dropping a set.  Tapper played some good table tennis and managed to get close in the second set - but it didn't matter what he did he just could not get close to Carlaw.

In the semi finals Carlaw beat Philip Brocks - who had an injured foot and Tapper beat William Brocks in four sets.
In the womens Ngaire Garrett came from a 2-0 deficit to beat Nola Falconer 5-2.
This gave Garrett her ninth singles title.
In the mens double - Chris Carlaw and Kevin Tapper accounted for the two Brock brothers, William and Philip.  Although playing well and nearly taking the second set, they had not answer for the skill and experience of their opposites.
Falconer and Kathryn Crook were only seeded second in the womens doubles but managed to beat the top pair of Ngiare Garrett and Jane Bodkin.
In the mixed doubles Ngiare and Ron Garrett just got past William Brocks and Nola Falconer in a five set final. It was interesting to note that Ngiare and Ron regained the title they had last won ten years ago.
In the Veteran section, John Glasson beat Neil Tapper in the mens and Ngiare Garett confirmed her number one status by a repeat - by beating Nola Falconer.
Jane Bodkin could not match Lena McCauley in the Womens A Reserve going down in straight sets.  She reversed this by partnering up in the doubles with Kathryn Cook and beating McCauley and Lynette Galt.
The Mens A Reserve mens the top and second seed battled it out with Neil Tapper beating Clive Adamson in the fifth 21-19.
The Reserve A doubles was won by second seeds, Alister Rapley and Neil Carlaw over Brian Gibson and David Sutherland.

The following players in the lower grades were:
Alister Rapley, Daryl Holden, Gordon Law, Dennis Wixon, Trevor Bell, Ross Clarke, Margaret Carlaw, Trish Beattie, Margaret Joyce, Debbie Garrett, Linley Wright, Bruce Lake.
