Cheeky tactics in 1975 for Western against Northern - Murray Heath the culprit......

Murray Heath showed what an experienced player can do when it counts to win a game.  The following was noted in 1975 in game in which he was playing for Western against Northern in the Sports Trust Cup competition.
The situation was this:
Northern won a five yard scrum and went for a push-over try.  All seemed well for Northern as the scrum pushed onto the line and the ball was still well controlled in the back of the green pack.
But then the quick-thinking Western half-back, Murray Heath realising that four points were going against him, possible six, ran into an off-side position.  Not then being penalised as he had hoped he began hacking into the back of the Northern scrum and the whistle went.
Northern was given a penalty and, from a wide angle the attempt at goal missed.
The referee had two options one would be to give Northern a penalty try or allowed the advantage and let play continue and in spite of Heath's infringement the try would probably have been scored.
The final score was 9-7 to Western so the ruling in this case had a huge affect on the bearing of the result.

Recall this game clearly. All Black at the time Ken Stewart was not impressed - he chased me of the paddock. If he could have got me he would have screwed my neck. His brother In law the late Andy Dickson was number eight - he was not impressed either. As time went on we have joked about it many time. In those days Western struggled to get a win - we certainly celebrated this one
