While we are talking about 1959 I remember a superb outdoor basketball game which was played this year that saw Makarewa draw with St Marys.
With less than two minutes to full-time, a movement from Makarewa saw Linda Robb, goal to level the score at 10-10. Both teams played inspiring basketball and it was only the ring of the bell that decided the score.
These two teams have a large following and it was one of the largest supporters seen at a club basketball game.  The day saw strong north westerlies which made it hard for the shooters.
Had the goal shooting of the Makarewa girls been more consistent then they might have been the victors.  Makarewa had the wind behind them in the first half but only managed to get 5 goals compared to St Mary's 1.
The St Mary's shooters, Cecilia and Monica Fahey took advantage of the Makarewa handicap in the second half and rattled them taking four quick goals.  Two goals in reply from Makarewa took them ahead but then St Mary's fought back and the game was theres at 8-7, but another one each made it 9-8 and then when it looked like St Mary's had it and the fans definitely thought so as well, a final burst by Linda Robb saw it level.  Cecilia Fahey heralded her return with a good display and it must be said it was probably her fine play which saved the game.
Nola Cruickshank showed that she is a strong contender for representative honours with a good display at defence.  At centre Marie O'Neill was always in the thick of it.
Playing her first game for the season, Christobel Barron (nee McNeill) directed play with her old head for Makarewa. Noeline Robb was the most consistent on defence for Makarewa and timed some beautiful intercepts which kept her team in the game.  Other Makarewa girls to stand out were, Valerie Blackler and Marion Pearson.
