Welcome to Yacck - we hope you have great pleasure in reading the stories from the past and would love you to make positive comments for everyone to enjoy. The Yacck Team.
The Southland netball team was heading off to the New Zealand tournament in 1973 with high hopes. Their coach, Mrs Val Pierce, said there was not one individual that stood out, but they played as a whole team. Mary Morris withdrew due to injury and was replaced by Carol Brown of Makarewa, who had fit into the team well, considering the short notice.
Jenny Mason and Barbara Lange were in the shooting circle, with Christine McLay at centre.
McLay linked with wing attack and experienced player in Margaret Holden.
Lynley Smith, Mary Templeton and Francis Craig completed the team in the defence line.
June Caird, was able to play in any position on defence, and her knack of grabbing intercepts out of nowhere made the depth great.
Southland won four of their ten games at the New Zealand tournament, which gave them a sixth equal placing in second grade. It was only two years ago that Southland was relegated to second grade.
