Bluff too good for Pirates in Galbraith Shield competition 1956

With R. Rouse contributing 16 points Bluff had little difficulty in maintaining their lead in the 1956 Invercargill competition.
Bluff beat Pirates, 25-3 in the main game at Rugby Park and Pirates were unlucky to be down by 16-3 at halftime as they appeared to have the better of Bluff in the earlier stages of the game.
Pirates felt the welt of Bluff as the previous week they had a draw with  Collegiate and were determined to go out and prove they were better than this.  Rouse was again the pinnacle in the Bluff team and although Pirates put up a fight in the first 40 min, where they started with a hiss and a roar, the Pirates forwards showed scant respect for the Bluff forward pack and set out to run it into the ground, but unfortunately this took a toll and the whole Pirates pack was outplayed in the second half.
Time and time again Pirates launched attacks on the Bluff line and with the backs working well together, and looking dangerous, Bluff was given a busy time on defence.
It was heartbreaking for Pirates to lose two almost certain tries within ten minutes, and still be six points down from two penalties kicked by Rouse on only the two occasions when Bluff got outside their 25yrds.
The bad luck, combined with the deadly kicking of Rouse, seemed to have been Pirates undoing, as soon after this they lost touch and just never seemed to get back into the game.
Rouse's 16 points for Bluff bought his total points for the season to 76. His tally came from a try, two conversions and three penalty goals.  Stapley was solid at first five eight and was on hand to score after Ryan (half-back) with a nice break from the scurm, he was a continual source of worry for the Pirates team.
Owen Brown played at first five eight in place of Ruatahi, and was the best of the Pirates back, and had to contend with some bad passing from Thomas at times and he ran hard whenever he got the opportunity.  Hayes and Mortimer kicked too much.
The Pirates forwards played well as a pack, with no one individual standing out. For Bluff, Bowen was good in the lineouts, with Cross and Budd always in the thick of it.
