B. Harvey gives a fine display at full-back for Bluff against Collegiate in 1956....

Bluff took a commanding lead in the 1956 Galbraith Shield Championship when they beat Collegiate 6-3.
It now has a three point lead with Collegiate second, Marist third and Pirates fourth.

It was not through want of trying that Collegiate tried to beat the Port side, and it was more bad luck than bad management that they did not manage to win.
A draw would have been a better indication of the game as the rugby was great to watch even though the ground was heavy  and the ball greasy.  It was good wet weather rugby.
Bluff full-back, B. Harvey had a magnificent game and although you would not have wanted to single out any one player, it would have been Harvey that gave Bluff the win.
Support from R. G. Rouse was also shown with him kicking two penalty goals for his side.
Harvey bought down the Collegiate captain, I. A. Nuttall, in full cry down the terrace touchline, threw himself in front of the Collegiate half, J. Morton who was dribbling through near the goal-line and brillantly snapped up the ball from the feet of the winger, E. Hollands, who was also within a few feet of the goal-line.  Unfortunately Harvey was injured when he went down on the ball and was replaced by N. Millar.
Collegiate matched the Bluff pack, and the Collegiate backs, with good service from J. Morton looked dangerous on many occasions.  Len Wilson was in good form, and scored the only try of the game after stepping neatly inside his marker after receiving from a ruck.
The Bluff five-eights, R. G. Rouse and B. Stapley, gave punch to the back line, but more often than not their breaks came to nothing through lack of support and stubborn defence by Collegiate.
First points were scored by Bluff, and the port side led 3-0 at half-time.  Collegiate evened the scores 10 minutes after half-time and it looked as if the game would end that way until Rouse kick his second goal.
The game was that tight that the crowd could not contain themselves when Ian Todd the Collegiate flanker lay injured on the ground and the referee was oblivious to the fact, letting play continue.
