The Glengarry A team won the Centre Hope Gibbons trial in 1985 and was looking to back it up in 1986.  Because of their victory last year they started behind their major challenger, Invercargill.
The latter team has more experience so punters would probably put their money on them.

With over half the circuit completed, Glengarry's Robert Pine and Rex Randal won by 40 seconds.
Shane Fletcher, Jerard Stock and Craig Hillis were the younger team members but they all rode great races.
Invercargill was gracious in their loss as they lost Tony Clarke at the 15 mile mark and although they tried hard to close the gap they could not muster it with four against five. The four cyclists that came second were; Wayne McLellan, Gary Smith, Michael Leahy, and Leighton Smith.
Third place was Glengarry B. team which consisted of Dick Harris, Merv Davis, Mike Huges, John Bath and Dave Graves.
Some of the novice riders that completed time trials Andrew Barlow, Adam McLeay, Dion Davis,
John Kissell and Grey Sycamore, Simon McLeay, Mark Smith, Richard McIvor, Ashley Abbot,
Todd Grave.
Chris Muir, Shane Gough, Nicholas Leader, Logan Anderson, Kurt Black.

At the awards Andrew Kissell was named Southland Cyclist of the year - he bagged two national titles at the New Zealand Championships and was the only fourth Southlander to get a New Zealand title.
