PictureAlister Hansen

Alister Hansen the 18 year old apprentice won the annual 100 mile Timaru-Christchurch road race in 1958.  Five of the six places were won by Invercargill riders which showed the strength in the South.

It was exceptional that Hansen won the race as he had only a short one season cycling career and his only previous major win was the Invercargill's cycling club's 76 mile road race.
It was remarkable as Hansen broke his chain just before Rolleston.  He rode strongly to catch the bunch before Templeton then took control to be the easiest winner in the 10 year history. His time was 4:59:17.8 .

Other riders to compete were:
F. Young (Invercargill), B. Cook (Avon), Ray Alcock (Invercargill), R. Marshall (Invercargill), W. Coats (Invercargill), L. Bishop (Avon), B. Dore (Christchurch), L. Payne (Palmerston North),  G. Lankow (Wanganui), J. Holloway (Invercargill).

J. Holloway wins 25 mile massed race....

J. Holloway won the Invercargill Amateur Cycling Club's 25 mile massed start race in 1958 which was from Invercargill to Ryal Bush and back.

Other riders to compete were:
T. Inneson, B, Toomey, Ray Alcock, T. Tindale, H. Hubber, Graham Sycamore, K. Healey, J. Hall, R. Browning, John Healey, J. McDermott, J. Hall,

Peter McEwan wins cycling race to Waimahaka - Invercargill.

Invercargill's Cycling Club's race to Waimahaka was won by Peter McEwan.  By riding away from his competition in the last ten miles McEwan was an easy winner.
A good tussle was seen between John Healey and P. Hughes.
The first race of the season was also held for novices with John Wright and Graeme Coats being first and second respectively.

Other riders for these events were:

P. Swain, Peter Kett, Trevor Bloy, Graeme Boult.
