There were record numbers competing in the Otago cross country in 1936. There were 17 teams with 102 competitiors.
Three teams from Southland took part, Invercargill and St Paul's in the senior grade and St Paul's in the junior grade.
The first Southland senior home was A.L. Hind from St Pauls in 11th place. He was just ahead of B.Crowther (Invercargill) and G. H. Watson (Invercargill), formerly of Canterbury.
Placings were: A. R. Geddes, L.I. Curtis, J. McLaren, J. G. Barnes, L. J. Logan, G. Davie, W. A. Stewart, G.L. Austin, S, Asher, T. G. Pearson.
The teams in finishing order were: Civil Service, Anglican, Caversham, Invercargill.
The first 12 runners were bunched together, Munro and Moore both of Mornington gained a slight advantage over the last mile. St Paul's saw W. Miller (4th), N.Dorman (7th), R. McAlister (11th).
Runners finished in the following order: G. S. Munro, C. S. Moore, R. Wilkinson, W. Miller, R. S. Moody, R. Dalton.
It was announced after the meet that the following Otago team would compete in the New Zealand cross country championship in Auckland:
