1982 Star Rugby club notes....

Last week we drew with Albion on a heavy Gore Showgrounds pitch and I think it was probably a fair result.  By necessity and not design star fielded all emergencies due to injury, and even took up U/23 coach Rodney Forbes who replaced Robbie Hill at half-time.  Most worrying is Brian McKechnie (on crutches) and Robbie Hill (hamstring).  Alan Monaghan (hamstring) while top forwards, Malcolm Quinn (back) Earl Kingi (leg) and Shaun Flynn (finger) should be all ok in  a week or so.................
Coach Terry O'Donnel must be a worried man with the first game of the top eight beginning next Saturday.  Player of the day went to Brian Broad as he was the only senior player back in our clubrooms when the announcements were made.  Star missed a glorious opportunity of winning the game in the final minutes only a knock on preventing the try.  Stu Ogilvy and Barry Flynn were stead forwards, while Richard Wheeler stood well at first-five, Fu Vaili ran strongly on the wing and Ron Whelan a safe custodian.
Senior Reserve
After holding Pirates well into the wind to be only 0-7 down at half time, deteriorated, and plunged to a 0-31 loss of form and I can only guess at a lack of discipline.  The coach summed it up when he announced his player of the day to supporter Shirley Todd, give it to a girl, because we played like girls.  Paul Scobie got plenty of lineout ball while Grant Hannon (hooker) excelled in tidying up and on the black.  Eddie Siva was the only back to impress both on attack and defence.
Under 23
Defeated Collegiate Maroon convincingly by 22-0 and in the process gave an impressive fifteen man display.  Ewan Waddell gave the team a great start, with a penalty and a drop in the first five minutes.  This was followed by a great forward rush, culminating in a Rusty Blanch try.  Dean Anglem and Tony Laidlaw were both tops in the hard driving play, while player of the day Kevin Johnstone took good lineout ball and shone in all aspects of forward play.  Michael Parry again gave great service and is destined for higher honours, while in midfield Rod McLeod and Geoff McMillan ran strongly.   Winger Craig Drummond fielded well on defence as did full-back "Beef" McLellan.
Under 20
Down 0-8 at half-time and holding the strong S.B.H.S. first XV well into the second half, collapsed to surrender three late tries and finally go down 0-28.  Barry Tangney contested lineout and maul ball hotly, while Tony O'Driscoll took good ball at No. 6.  The backs missed the steady influence Kevin Harridine (injured) but Vaughan Stronach covered and tackled well.  Michael Turner also turned in a tidy game at second five eight.
Congratulations to the following players selected for Town:
Senior; Brian McKechnie (capt), Alan Monahan, Barry Flynn and Shaun Flynn
U/20 Tony Lawlor, Ewen Waddell and Dean Anglem
U/18 Rusty Blanch, Shane Edmund.
