Southland Zone's 16 dart team has returned home with some good results from the New Zealand championships in Hamilton. Although not as successful as other years team members were well pleased with the results....
Jill McDonald won the women's New Zealand singles, to go with the Australasian title she already held. She is only the fourth New Zealand woman to have achieved the double. She will also be the last as the Australasian tournament is now obsolete.
Jill has also been selected as a member of the New Zealand women's team to compete ain the Puma Masters which will be played in Nelson after the World Masters tournament in October.
Kerry Anderson and Margaret Huther finished runner up in the pairs.
Kerry was also named the New Zealand darts personality of the year during the tournament. She has an impressive record including seven national junior titles. She has been competing in senior ranks for only two years and in this time has represented the Southland B team.
Celia Flynn made it to the last eight of the women's single and was eliminated by the beaten finalist.
Ngaire Hogg, captain, Kerry Anderson and Margaret Huther, were named in the South Island women's B team.
The mens team was unbeaten in section play of the teams competition, but in the last round lost to zone 5 and had to be content with runner up.
Dale Frampton finished third, in the men's singles, and Lex Turner and John Kane, were third in the men's pairs.
Frampton was selected as captain of the men's South Island team, and had three zone 16 players with him - Barry Templeton, Barry Watson and Ian Hogg. Templeton and Frampton were also selected in the four man team to represent New Zealand at the World Masters tournament. McDonald, Turner and Kane were selected for the South Island B Team.
Turner won the New Zealand executive trophy at the tournament for the fourth time.
