With eight new players the Eastern Southland K Cup team has been working hard in preparation for the national women's hockey tournament.
Some members of last year's team were not available this year because some found the tournament too expensive. The team was selected in June and have been training twice a week plus playing Saturday's and Sunday's which has meant a lot of travelling for some of the players.
The team is as follows:
Dawn Ross - goalkeeper (Mataura) Has represented Eastern at K Cup level for three years and will be a great asset to this years side.  Has had difficulty fitting in with the new defence, but with more practice is sure to prove her worth.
Sally-Anne Ross - left full-back (Lumsden) A former Hokonui player and has represented at this level in the last two years, She was also in the Eastern B and U21 team.  She is coping well with the new change from a forward to the full-back position.
Katie O'Connor - right full-back (Riversdale) A newcomer to the K Cup team and has a tendency to give away penalties but at least she gives it a go, and uses her speed well to beat the oppostion.
Mary Devine - left full-back (St Peters) Was in last year's Easter Holden Cup team and has also represented the Eastern secondary school team at the national tournament in the last two years.  Although slow getting her hit in - the pace on this will quicken once her confidence comes, but is playing well and understands her positional play better.
Karen Stewart - half-back (Lumsden) A young player who always tries hard.  She has a clean hit up to her forwards and uses her speed. She has had two years at secondary school tournaments.
Alisa Dempster - centre-half (Mossburn- captain). Has changed from full-back to centre-half to give the halves more experience.  She has returned to K Cup after a lapse since 1968 but has played hockey throughout. One of the fittest players in the team, understands and reads the game well.  Before 1968 she played K Cup for six years.
Lisa Horrell - right half-back (Riversdale) One of the youngest members of the team she was in Eastern's B team last year and has attended two secondary school tournaments.  Plays her club hockey in the forward line and judges her passes to the forwards well.
Vicki Stewart - right half-back (Riversdale) Now thinking on field more and passing well to her forwards.  Her back tackling is strong and is another young player who has had two years at secondary school tourn.
Sharon Alexander - left wing (lumsden) Another member of the last two year's secondary school team, Capable of getting goals but needs a bit more confidence - which will come with more play in this higher level.
Shona Elder - left inner or centre forward (Riversdale), One of the more experienced team members, having played for and captained the K Cup team for two years.  She was also a non-travelling reserve for the New Zealand team which was selected for last year's Olympics.  Had a spell this year due to health reasons but has quickly come up to the required fitness. Sure to be one  of the team's top scorers.
Debbie Wicks - left inner or centre forward (Lumsden) Has been in the K cup team for the last three years and had four years in the U-21 team. A tireless worker she is speedy around the field.
Catherine Thompson - right inner (Lumsden) A member of this year's New Zealand team, she first represented Eastern at the national tournament when she was 16.  She is finding it different to returning to right inner,  having played right wing for New Zealand, howevery she will be the strongest player on the right side and has speed to burn.
Annette Tulloch - right wing (Mataura - vice-captain) A player capable of scoring goals. She will be of great value attacking on the right flank and one of the most experienced player in the team.  Has played for the New Zealand U23.
Hilary Beeby - forward (Lumsden) Capable of playing anywhere in the forward line.  A determined and speedy player in the circle.  Has been to one secondary school tournament.
