There were two Southland Basketball teams that attended the New Zealand championships in 1953.  Both A and B team are a combination of youth and experience and they were confident of doing well in New Plymouth.

The members are as:
A GRADE:
J. Rewcastle (captain)
Has represented South Island and New Zealand  in 1949 and 1951-52 and is playing her best basketball and will be considered for top honours again.
N. Holloway (vice captain) is a top player and is fit and agile and feeds her forwards well.
R. McGill-Brown is an excellent rebounder and is attending her second tournament.
A. Coulson is a good goal scorer and has previously played for Hutt Valley and represented North Island.
M. Noble is strong on attack and scores well under the goal.  Feeds her forwards well.
W. Rabbit new to representative basketball and capable of scoring goals.  Can be erratic at times.
M. Stevens has improved since last tournament and is developing into a good centre
R. Trail who has represented Central Otago has a bright future in the game as she is determined and strong.
B GRADE:
G. Richards is the captain who will be an asset to her team with her representative experience.
Anne Sinclair has a good sense of anticipation and is developing well.
M. Price and Helen Montheith are two young players who are playing their first representative games and have a promising career.
Barabara Murray (vice captain) is a solid reliable player
Margaret Hoskins is the player with the best prospects in the team as she is an accurate shot from anywhere around the court.
J. Anderson although lacking experience is keen and a hard worker.
N. Crimp is a tall centre who could cause difficulty for her opposition, but she needs to put more aggression into her game.
