Whatever happened to Cobber Branks in the boxing circle....

With the boxing coming to Southland next month, it reminded me of a boxer that represented Southland and New Zealand.......

Mervyn McMillan a light welterweight champion was looking at making his debut in Invercargill in 1957.  The Southland Boxing Association, although being granted a licence some time ago, they are having difficulty matching him with an appropriate opponent.  They advised one was found in Johnny Hunter formerly of Scotland on May 27 1957.   Hunter was a former Scottish amateur lightweight champion and has had at least 45 bouts with few losses  
The Southland Boxing Association knew that they had to have a good fight to engage the public and because Hunter is now living in Christchurch they have requested a team of boxers come South and meet Southland boxers.  Their previous encounter will always be remembered as a resounding success so it is hoping for a repeat.  What happened with 'Cobber Branks' a twice New Zealand champion.
