A. Ineson and R. Marshall both from Invercargill took first and second places in the annual 'Round the Gorges' in the Canterbury amateur cycling race over 100 miles

Tony Ineson and Marshall split from the main field, but it was the former that had more in the tank at the finish. B. Berry (Christchurch) was third.
J. Holloway (Blenheim) did it harder though, by setting a blistering pace and finding himself riding alone.
Two scratch riders C. Hibbend (Papanui) and J. Peoples (Wellington) were two minutes off the pace.  G. Hill (Christchurch) dropped back 10 minutes into the race, along with rider Robin Harrison (Timaru).
Ineson set a new winning record in 4 hr 33min 34 sec.
The previous best winning time was also an Invercargill rider, T. Waddick in 1939 with a time of 4 hr 51 min 33 sec.
The fastest time was held by W. Dalton in 4 hr 14min 20sec.  He rode from scratch.
