The Queen Mother visited Invercargill in 1958 and Southland held the Caledonian Games for the occasion. The brillance of the competitors performances would go down as one of the finest in the provinces history. There were many stars that day and none more than champion axeman, Jack Swale and the nuggerty Fijian sprinter Danny Johns.
Six Southland pipe bands, 15,000 spectators and all the athletes made it a special day that would be a lasting memory for all that attended.
Evan Forde, who had turned 21 that day and leading Southland professional runner could not quite get up to beat J. K. Tait to whom had a handicap of 75 yrds.
