Two riders, Alex Panagiotidis (Senior) and Ray Alcock (Junior) were selected to represent Otago-Southland in Wellington in 1957. Six other Invercargill riders were selected to ride in Canterbury.
Panagiotidis, was in fine form in the late 1950's on grass and hard tracks. It was in 1954 that he came runner up to Warren Johnston (Waikato), who was selected to go to the Melbourne Olympic games in 1956.
Alcock that year was a promising young rider who had many wins on the grass.
A team of 11 riders who were competing against the Canterbury team were;
J. Holloway, W. Agnew, J. Anderson, T. Inneson, B. Hardy, T. Tindale (Invercargill), B. O'Connor, C. Bremner, N. Howell, N. Dryden, B. Finnie (Dunedin).
Two New Zealand representatives in Pat Wylie and Les Lock were amongst the top riders in the race.
