PictureGraham Sycamore is on far left, winning the invitation mile.
Wellington's Graham Wright, the New Zealand junior 5  mile champion, beat a top class field at Kew Bowl, Invercargill in 1961.  He proved too strong on the day for Australian Olympic representative, R.Baensch, who was second, while another Australian, Cliff Burville was third after setting a sizzling pace.

The visitors from across the ditch were also beaten in the mile invitation by Graham Sycamore - they also failed in the half mile.
Conditions were blustery, which meant that records were hard to break. Peter Bartels who was a favourite with the crowd found his handicap too stiff in the half mile event and although he showed blistering pace he could not do better than third place. Bartel miscounted the laps and thinking he had only had 1 lap to go raced hard and withdrew a lap to early.
Other riders to compete were:
L. Booth, R. Baensch, N. Williams, P. McCallum, Ray Alcock, P. Hilston, K. Healey, John Healey, R. Crooks, P. Swain, J. Kennedy, J. Hawke,K. Henderson, Grant  Cousins, B. Goldsworthy, Trevor McLeay, G. Roff, P. Robinson, T. Robinson, G. Coates, M. McLeay, B. Jordan, J. Swanson, W. Robinson, L. Ashby, P. Duggan, N. Barlow, A. Henderson, W. Erskine, Tony Ineson, Ray Marshall, M. Cracknell, Peter Kett,
